Who's Hot/Who's Not 8 17 13

Happy Saturday! It’s the end of the week, so let’s see who’s been hot and who can’t get a piece of the ball.

Alfonso Soriano: It looks like going to another team can just help sometimes, especially when they return to their original team. Soriano has been unstoppable these past three days, and this week he’s put up a .483 average with six homers and 19 RBI’s. The 37 year old now has 25 homers and 77 RBI’s, and could easily beat his 32 homer/108 RBI season last year.

Joe Mauer: Well played, Mauer. He hasn’t been playing as well as Soriano, but has been hitting .433 this week. It’s moved his batting stats to .324/.405/.477. Could he stay hot and beat his batting stance in 2009? I doubt it, he would have to hit .365/.444/.587. But he’s still doing well at least.

Jayson Werth: He seems like he’s the only National that’s batting well now. He’s batting .483 this past week, and has moved his stance to .332/.403/.530 through 90 games played. It’s by far the best he’s ever performed, which is a little surprising for a 34 year old.

Yu Darvish: Once again, Darvish fiddled with another perfect game, striking out a career high 16. He now has gone 3-0 in his last three, put up a 1.64 ERA in that time, and has a 35/4 K/BB ratio. He leads the majors with 207 strikeouts, and now is 12-5 with a 2.64 ERA.

Mat Latos: Of course the two times that I have seen the Cubs this year, one was when the Angels went off against Jeff Samardzija, the other when Mat Latos threw eight innings of scoreless ball and striking out nine to get the win. He’s gone 2-0 with a .84 in his last three starts, and now is 12-3 with a 3.04 ERA. Why the Padres gave up this guy, I will never know. He’s only 25 years old, and has a career 3.34 ERA.

Hyun-Jin Ryu: The rookie has performed quite well since the Dodgers have gotten hot. He’s gone 3-0 with a 1.40 ERA. But to be fair, the Dodgers can’t lose, so 3-0 isn’t that impressive J. He’s now 12-3 with a 2.91 ERA, and is a Rookie of the Year candidate this year.

Huston Street: Since returning from the all-star break, Street has been scary. He’s 7/7 in his last 7 opportunities, not giving up a single run, and now has blown only one save on the year. He is 0-4 with a 3.26 ERA, but if he continues pitching like this, that’s going to go down quickly.

Those are the seven who are quite hot. Let’s see who’s not hot.

Pete Kozma (Cardinals): Kozma can’t seem to put the bat on the ball this year, even when he showed signs of a good ball player last season and earlier this year. He’s put up a .048 batting average this week, and now has a .225/.273/.284 stance. He really needs to step it up if he wants to play for a team like the Cardinals.

Jose Iglesias (Tigers): Ever since Iglesias has been a Tiger, he has not hit as well as he did as a member of the Red Sox. He’s hit .150 this week, and has moved his batting average from around .350 to .308 since the break. He was once the Rookie of the Year favorite in the AL, now I have no idea who will win it.

Starlin Castro (Cubs): Remember when Castro hit a homer and a triple to accompany six RBI’s in his debut as a Cub? Two years ago, he led the league in hits with 207, batting .307/.341/.432 then. Now he bats .244/.279/.347 with 122 hits in an MLB high 499 at-bats. Castro already has 99 strikeouts, one less than what he had all last year. He needs to walk more before he thinks of putting the bat on the ball.

Bartolo Colon (Athletics): I’m kind of surprised to see his name here. Colon’s last three starts have been filled with tough ball, going 0-2 with a 7.82 ERA. In his last outing, he only went four innings before giving up 5 earned runs to the Astros. He still is 14-5 with a 2.97 ERA, but needs to do better than what he has done this past week, or else that ERA is going to skyrocket.

Drake Britton (Red Sox): When Koji Uehara gets the day off, Britton is the one to try and close out the game, but fails to do so, giving up three runs on five hits to the Yankees. He has a 5.40 ERA this week, which has jumped his ERA to 3.86.

That’s it for who’s hot and who’s not this week. Email me at statsbuddy42@gmail.com for any questions/comments/concerns. My beat the streak is at 3, and today I have both Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte. Let’s go Pirates!
